The legend
Irish tradition connects Dún Aonghasa with Aonghas, described as a leader of the Fir Bolg.
The Fir Bolg belong to Ireland's mythological invasion tradition and form part of the legendary peoples who inhabited Ireland before the Tuatha Dé Danann.
The real place
Dún Aonghasa is a spectacular prehistoric stone fort more than 3,000 years old, standing beside an immense Atlantic cliff on Inis Mór.
Archaeology demonstrates the antiquity of the fort but does not prove the Fir Bolg legend.
