Mythology

The Salmon of Knowledge

The Salmon of Knowledge is central to one of the most famous stories about the young Fionn mac Cumhaill.

The poet Finnéces seeks the salmon whose wisdom is said to be extraordinary. When the young Fionn cooks the fish for him, he burns his thumb and instinctively puts it into his mouth, gaining the knowledge that had been destined for his teacher.

The story becomes one of the defining explanations for Fionn's supernatural wisdom and makes the Salmon of Knowledge one of the most recognisable legendary creatures or objects in Irish tradition.

River Boyne

County Meath, Ireland

The Salmon of Knowledge story is traditionally associated with the Boyne. The river provides a strong landscape connection to the legend of Fionn's acquisition of supernatural wisdom. No exact modern point on the river should be presented as definitively the location of the legendary event.
